Heat And Thermodynamic Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the specific heat ?
The specific heat or (Specific Heat Capacity (c)) is defined as the amount of heat (energy) needed to raise the temperature of Ikg of the substance by
(1°C or 1K).
What the unit of specific heat?
(J °C^-1g^-1) or (J K^-1g^-1)
Specific Heat Capacity: Heat energy required to heat a substance depends
on:
1- The mass of the substance.
2- The temperature rise.
3- The nature of the substance.
What is the calorimeter?
A calorimeter is an insulated device used for measuring t amount of heat absorbed or released in a chemical reaction or physical process.
What is the latent heat?
The latent heat of fusion (or vaporization of a material is defined as the heat required to convert a solid into a liquid or a liquid into a vapour, without change of temperature.
What is the kinetic theory pustulates?
•Gas particles are size-less relative to the volume of the gas.
> Gas particles are in constant rapid motion
U25 kinetea
• Gas particles have elastic collision; means no kinetic energy is lost on impact
> The absolute temperature is directly proportional to the kinetic of a gas
• Gas particles have no attraction to each other, i.e. no inter particle forces
What is the vapour pressure?
Vapour pressure: - The partial pressure exerted by the vapour when it is in equilibrium with its liquid. It depends on temperature and nature of the substance.
What is the boiling point?
The temperature at which the vapour pressure equals the prevailing atmospheric pressure is called
Boiling point
What is the critical temperature Tc?
There is, for each gas, a temperature
above which the attractive forces between molecules are not strong enough to produce liquefaction no matter how high a pressure is applied.
What is normal (standard)boiling point?
The temperature at which the vapor
pressure of a liquid is equal to standard pressure (1.00 atm = 760 mmHg=
760 torr = 101.325 kPa).
What is Triple point?
The teperature and pressure at which the solid, liquid, and gas phases exist simultaneously.
What is critical point?
The temperature above which a substance will always be a gas regardless of the pressure.
