Heating And Cooling Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is heat energy measured in?
Kilojules kj
What is temperature measured in?
Degrees celsius
Why is heat not the same as temperature?
This is because heat is a form of energy while the temperature is the measurement of how hot or cold a place is.
What is conduction?
Conduction is when heat travels through a solid.
Why would a stone floor feel colder to your bare feet than a carpet?
Because stone is a good conductor of heat so the heat flows quickly from the stone to your feet.
What is convection?
Convection is when the particles in a liquid pr a gas move, carrying heat with them from one place to another. It cant happen in solids because the particles aren’t free to move.
where else do convection currents occur?
in nature.
how does a house reduce it waste in heat?
using:
double glazed windows
curtains (they trap air)
reflective foil or in walls reduces heat loss by radiation.
what is radiation?
is when waves carry the energy through air or through a vacuum.
why is the sun able to give heat to a house even though everything has been insulated?
because the sun radiates high energy radiation .
why is it better to wear light colours on a hot day?
because it doesn’t absorb much heat, but if you wear dark colours such as black it absorbs the heat.
