Sound Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are sound waves?
Carry energy/ sound from one place to another.
What is sound?
Sound is energy that travels in waves allowing us to hear things
How can you show that an object makes a sound when it vibrates?
By holding one end of a ruler, over the edge of the desk and applying force to it.
What is a vibration?
It is a repeating backwards and forwards motion of particles. A the particles vibrate some are squashed together and others are spread apart.
What can vibration travel through?
Different materials such as air when you play a musical instrument.
What do instruments do when they are played?
They make the air particles close to it vibrate and the vibrations are passed onto more air particles. When the vibrations reach your ears you detect them as sounds.
Do air particles travel?
No they only vibrate.
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz (Hz)
What is a frequency?
it is known as the speed of a sound wave.
How does sound travel through our ears?
It travels through the auditory canal into the eardrum. Then from the eardrum. The vibrations are passed onto the cochlea by a set of three small bones. The hammer, stirrup ad anvil. From the cochlea the vibrations are sent to the auditory nerve which send electrical signals to the brain.
Which materials does sound travel in?
Liquids and solids, the same way as air however it travels faster because the particles are closer together.
Why cant sound travel through a vacuum?
Because there are no particles to vibrate, therefore not making any sound.
What is the amplitude?
Its the maximum distance the wave reaches from rest position
