A
- Began in Louth when riots due to rumours of the King scrapping the church and the monastery
- The Vicar also spread rumours that Henry was going to confiscate the treasure of all parish churches and tax baptisms, marriage and funerals
- Surrounding towns started to riot as well
- Horncastle - one of Cromwell’s agents and a bishop were murdered
- People marched on Lincoln, Henry sent Earl of Suffolk to put it down
- Rebellion squished when the gentry jumped ship
7
Q
Pigrimage of Grace!!!! Wow. 1536-37
A
- After the collapse of the Lincolnshire uprising, another began in Yorkshire
- Led by Robert Aske, revised demands + put focus on preserving the church and protecting monasteries
- Able to recruit both nobility and gentry - Lord Darcy, Sir Thomas Percy
- Rebels numbered over 30,000
- Didn’t initially appreciate the size of the uprising, sent Thomas Howard who took a month to arrive
- Norfolk was outnumbered, had to offer a truce + allowed rebels to submit complaints
- Aske drew up the Pontefract articles, submitted to Henry
- Henry issued a general pardon while he considered them, but was interrupted by moron Bigod
8
Q
Who was lovely Aske?
A
- A London lawyer
- Was kidnapped by the rebels and eventually persuaded to lead them
- Drew up Pontefract articles after the siege and taking of Pontefract Castle: wanted legitimisation of Mary, ridding of the ‘Evil Councillors’, meeting of parliament in York, end to monastery closures, restoration of links w/ Rome
- Had to be v. careful to not imply Henry wasn’t Head of the Church - treason
- Got lied to by Henry + fell for it like a moron, Henry turned back on his promises then hunted down and killed him and the other rebels
9
Q
Bigod’s rebellion
A
- Unlikely rebel - was a protestant, a JP, and a member of the Reformation Parliament
- Even helped compile the Valor Ecclestiasticus
- But he wanted monasteries reformed, not dissolved, so joined the rebels
- Didn’t trust Henry and felt Aske would never get acceptance of the Pontefract Articles, so revived the rebellion in Yorkshire
- Messed up, got beat up, ran off to Cumberland before being captured and hanged in 1537
10
Q
Duke of Norfolk + the Pilgrimage
A
- Led the faction that had opposed Wolsey, then promptly became a critic of Cromwell and Cranmer too
- Cromwell’s growing power weakened Norfolk’s influence, but he was still trusted by Henry
- Couldn’t crush the rebels by military means, so engineered their defeat by deceiving Aske and promising to take his demands seriously (lol)
11
Q
Impact of Pilgrimage + the suppression
A
- Threat to law and order in North, would continue through the Tudor period
- But dealt ruthlessly with Aske, Bigod & other captains to deter future rebels
