what is it
abnormal protrusion of viscous out of its normal body cavity
characteristic of reducible hernia
do not reappear when pushed in
characteristic of irreducible hernia
can strangulate / obstruct lumen
what causes it
mainly increased intra-abdominal pressure by pregnancy heavy lifting coughing constipation
what are epigastric hernias
usually arise in children due to congenital malformation / weakness of linea albla
what is prevalence of epigastric hernias
males 3 : 1 females
what are femoral hernias
below and lateral to pubic tubercle
what is prevalence of femoral hernias
females 10:1 males
what is inguinal hernia
above and medial to pubic tubercle
most common hernia
what is direct inguinal hernia
medial to inferior to epigastric vessels
more common in old men
what is indirect inguinal hernia
lateral to inferior epigastric vessels
more common in younger men
can be caused by patent processus vaginalis (structure though which testes descend)
