Hip Flashcards
(24 cards)
what is apophysitis?
inflammation and stress at the growth areas of bone (apophyses)
what is an avulsion?
where a fragment of bone is pulled away by a tendon or ligament that is attached to it
what is the surgery for inguinal pain?
laparoscopic surgery
what is an acetabular labral tear?
damage to the rim of the acetabulum - the labrum
what is femoroacetabular impingement?
movement related disorder which involves symptomatic contact between the femoral head and acetabulum due to changes in their morphology
what are the two types of FAI?
CAM and Pincer
what is Pincer FAI?
over coverage of the socket of the acetabulum relative to the femoral head. front top rim of the acetabulum
what is CAM FAI?
femoral head and the neck relationship is aspherical (not perfectly round) contributing to abnormal contact between head and socket
what is Perthe’s disease?
idiopathic avascular necrosis of the femoral head in young patients due to temporary blood loss at the femoral head
what is arterial compromise?
kinking of the external iliac artery from repeated movements, compressing and narrowing the arteries and reducing blood flow to the soft tissues
what is deep gluteal syndrome?
irritated sciatic nerve in the sub gluteal space causing buttock pain and sciatic type symptoms
what are myositis ossifications?
calcification occurring in the soft tissues, usually after a haemotoma / contusion injury. new bone cells form between the torn muscle fibres
what is greater trochanter pain syndrome?
pain over the lateral hip, prevalent with gluteal tendinopathies
what two tests would you do for OA?
FABER - pain and limited range
Trendelenburg test
What two tests would you do for a labral tear?
??
what two tests would you do for FAI?
??
what two tests would you do for a stress fracture?
??
what two tests would you do for deep gluteal syndrome?
Pace’s sign (resisted abduction and external rotation)
FADIR
what two tests would you do for inguinal related pain?
resisted sit up
valsalva manoeuvre (deep breath, close mouth, pinch nose, breathe out forcefully)
what two test would you do for iliopsoas pain?
resisted hip flexion
modified thomas test
what tests would you do for a hamstring injury?
resisted knee flexion
single leg raise (stretch)
what two tests would you do for adductor related pain?
adductor squeeze
pain with passive adductor stretch
what two tests would you do for GTPS?
gluteal tendon load
FABER - lateral hip pain
single leg stand for 30 seconds
what is quadriceps contusion?
deep bruising to thigh muscle (usually vastus lateralis) caused by a direct blow / impact
causes rupture to muscle fibres at or adjacent to the area of impact, usually leading to haemotoma formation within the muscle
can lead to compartment syndrome or myositis ossifications
