Tensor Fasciae Latae
PA: Anterior iliac crest, lateral surface of ASIS and a portion of the border of the notch below it
DA: Iliotibial band and hence to the lateral tibial condyle at Gerdy’s tubercle of the tibia
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerve L4, L5, S1
Actions: Extends and External Rotation of the knee; Flexes abducts, and Internally rotates the hip; Dynamic stabilization of the knee
Biceps Femoris
PA: Long head = Upper ischial tuberosity
Short head = lateral lip of linea aspera inferior to the gluteus maximus attachment; proximal 1/2 of the lateral supracondylar line
DA: Fibular head, LCL of knee, lateral tibial condyle
Innervation: Long Head= tibial division of sciatic L5, S1, S2
Short head: common peroneal division of sciatic L5, S1, S2
Actions: Flexes the knee, extends the hip; secondarily laterally rotates hip and knee
Semitendinosus
PA: Inferomedial aspect of ischial tuberosity
DA: Medial aspect of proximal tibia at pes anserine
Innervation: Tibial division of sciatic nerve L5, S1, S2
Actions: Flexes knee, extends hip; secondarily medially rotates hip and knee
Semimembranosus
PA: Superolateral aspect of ischial tuberosity
DA: Posterior aspect of medial tibial condyle
Innervation: Tibial division of Sciatic nerve L5, S1, S2
Actions: Flexes knee, extends hip, secondarily medially rotates hip and knee
Pectineus
PA: pectineal line on superior ramus of pubis
DA: pectineal line between the lesser trochanter and the line aspera
Innervation: Femoral nerve L2, L3
Actions: Hip Adduction and flexion
Adductor Brevis
PA: Inferior rams of pubis
DA: Pectineal line and proximal 1/2 of medial lip of linea aspera
Innervation: Obturator nerve L2, L3
Actions: Adducts hip
Adductor Longus
PA: Anterior pubic body
DA: Middle 1/3 of medial lip of linea Aspera
Innervation: Obturator nerve L2 - L4
Actions: Hip adduction and flexion
Adductor Magnus
PA: Inferior ramus of pubis, inferior ramus of ischium and ischial tuberosity
DA: Linea Aspera, medial supracondylar line and adductor tubercle
Innervation: Obturator and tibial division of Sciatic L2-L4
Actions: Hip Adduction and extension
Gracilis
PA: Lower 1/2 of Pubic body, lower aspect of inferior pubic ramus and adjoining ischial ramus
DA: Proximal medial surface of the tibia at the Pes Anserine
Innervation: Obturator nerve L2, L3
Actions: Flexes and medially rotates the knee; Adducts the hip
Piriformis
PA: Anterior surface of sacrum at levels S2-S4
DA: Superior and medial aspect of greater trochanter
Innervation: Ventral Rami L5, S1, S2
Actions: Hip External Rotation; Abducts a flexed hip
Quadratus Femoris
PA: Lateral border of the ischial tuberosity
DA: Intertrochanteric crest and quadrate tubercle of femur
Innervation: Nerve to quadratus muscle L4-S1
Actions: Hip External rotation
Gluteus Maximus
PA: Posterior gluteal line of ilium, posterior sacrum and sacrotuberous ligament
DA: Gluteal tuberosity of femur and IT band
Innervation: Inferior gluteal nerve L5, S1, S2
Actions: Hip extension, abduction and external rotation; assists in stabilization of the knee through action of the IT band
Gluteus Medius
PA: lateral ilium between posterior and anterior gluteal lines
DA: lateral aspect of greater trochanter
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerves L4-S1
Actions: All Fibers: hip abduction Posterior fibers: ER Anterior Fibers: IR Single Limb support: keeps pelvis level(trendelenburg sign)
Gluteus Minimus
PA: Lateral ilium deep to gluteus medius between anterior and inferior gluteal line
DA: Anterolateral aspect of greater trochanter
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerves L4-S1
Actions: Hip abduction, Internal rotation
Rectus Femoris
PA:
Straight Head: AIIS
Reflected Head: groove on ilium superior to acetabulum and fibrous capsule of hip joint
DA: Patella by quadriceps tendon, tibial tuberosity by patellar tendon(ligament)
Innervation: Femoral nerve L2-L4
Actions: Extends knee and Flexes the hip
Sartorius
PA: ASIS
DA: Proximal Medial surface of the tibia at the Pes Anserine
Innervation: Femoral nerve L2-L3
Actions: Flexes, ER and abducts the hip; Flexes and Internally rotates the knee
Iliacus
PA: Superior 2/3 of iliac fossa; Anterior SI ligaments
DA: lesser trochanter
Innervation: Femoral nerve L2-L3
Actions: Flexes hip and External rotates the flexed hip
Psoas Major
PA: Transverse processes, Vertebral bodies and adjoining discs of T12-L5
Da: Lesser trochanter
Innervation: Ventral Rami of L1-L3
Actions: Hip flexion and external rotation; Trunk ipsilateral SB; spinal flexion during sit ups and spinal stabilization
Vastus Lateralis
PA: Intertrochanteric line; anterior and inferior borders of the greater trochanter; lateral lip of gluteal tuberosity; proximal 1/2 of linea aspera; and intermuscular septum
DA: Lateral patella by quads tendon; tibial tuberosity by patellar tendon; blends with lateral aspect of fibrous joint capsule of the knee
Innervation: Femoral n. L2, 3, 4
Actions: Extends knee and stabilizes the patella
Vastus Intermedius
PA: Proximal 2/3 of femur along anterior and lateral surfaces; distal aspect of lateral inter muscular septum
DA: Patella by quads tendon; tibial tuberosity by patellar tendon
Innervation: Femoral n. L2,3,4
Actions: Extends the knee
Vastus Medialis
PA: Medial intertrochanteric line; medial lip of linea aspera; proximal 2/3 supracondylar line; medial inter muscular septum; VMO arises from tendon of adductor magnus
DA: Medial patella by quad tendon; tibial tuberosity by patellar tendon; blends with medial aspect of fibrous joint capsule of knee
Innervation: Femoral n. L2,3,4
Actions: Extends the knee; stabilizes the patella
Articularis Genu
PA: Distal anterior aspect of femur
DA: Suprapatellar bursa
Innervation: Femoral n. L2,3,4
Actions: Prevents impingement of the bursa during knee extension
Popliteus
PA: Lateral femoral condyle on an impression on the distal most portion of the lateral supracondylar line
DA: Triangular area on the posterior tibia proximal to the soleal line
Innervation: Tibial n. L4, L5, S1
Actions: Unlocks the extended knee; OKC=IR of tibia; CKC=ER of femur
Plantaris
PA: Distal aspect of the lateral supracondylar line of the femur and the oblique popliteal ligament
DA: Posterior aspect of calcanues
Innervation: Tibial n. S1, S2
Actions: Weakly Plantar flexes the ankle
