Hip Special Test Flashcards
(33 cards)
Patrick’s (FABER) Test - purpose
identify hip dysfunction (mobility restriction)
Patrick’s (FABER) Test - description
pt supine. examiner passively flex, abducts, and ER hip test leg so that the foot of test leg is not op of the opposite knee. slowly lower knee of test leg towards table
Patrick’s (FABER) Test - result
(-) test leg’s knee falling onto table or at least parallel with opposite leg
(+) test leg’s knee remaining above the opposite straight leg
Grind (Scouring) Test - purpose
identify degenerative joint disease (DJD) of hip
Grind (Scouring) Test - description
pt supine. examiner flexes and adducts pt’s hip and add resistance in an abducted motion
Grind (Scouring) Test - result
reproduce pain in hip joint and refer pain to knee or elsewhere
Trendelenburg sign - purpose
identify weakness of glute medius or unstable hip joint
Trendelenburg sign - description
pt asked to stand on one lower limb
Trendelenburg sign - results
(-) pelvis on opp side should rise
(+) pelvis on opp side drops when pt stands on affected leg
Thomas Test - purpose
identify tightness of hip flexors
Thomas Test - description
pt lies supine while the examiner checks for excessive lordosis, which is usually present with tight hip flexors. examiner flexes one of pt’s hips, bringing the knee to the chest to flatten out lumbar spine and to stabilize pelvis. pt holds flexed hip against chest
Thomas Test - result
(-) no flexion contracture = hip being tested remain on table
(+) contracture = pt’s straight leg rises off table and muscle stretch end feel is felt
Ober’s Test - purpose
identify tightness of TFL/IT Band
Ober’s Test - description
pt S/L with lower leg flexed at hip and knee for stability. examiner then passively abducts and extends the pt’s upper leg with knee straight or flexed to 90d. examiner slowly lowers upper limb
Ober’s Test - result
contracture present = leg remains abducted and does not fall to table
Ely’s Test - purpose
to identify tightness of rectus femoris
Ely’s Test - description
pt prone and examiner passively flexes pt’s knee
Ely’s Test - result
(+) hip on same side spontaneously flexes with knee flexion
90-90 Hamstring Test - purpose
identify hamstring tighness
90-90 Hamstring Test - description
pt supine and flexes both hip to 90d while the knees are bent. pt may grasp behind the knees with both hands to stabilize hips at 90d of flexion. pt actively extends each knee one at a time
90-90 Hamstring Test - result
(+) if knee is unable to reach 10d from neutral position (lacking 10d of extension
Tripod Sign - purpose
identify tightness of hamstring muscle
Tripod Sign - description
pt is seated with both knees flexed to 90d over the edge of table. examiner then passively extends on knee
Tripod Sign - result
(+) pt extends trunk to relieve tension in hamstring muscle
