Histology Flashcards
(22 cards)
What are prokaryotic cells?
Cells without membrane bound organelles i.e. bacteria
What are facultative anaerobes?
Bacteria that are capable of aerobic respiration in the presence of oxygen
What obligate anaerobes?
Bacteria that die in the presence of oxygen
What colour do gram positive organisms stain?
blue (they retain the crystal violet stain due to the peptidoglycan cell wall)
Examples of gram positive cocci
streptococci (grape like clusters)
Staphylococci (chains)
Gram stain positive cocci in chains
staphylococci
Gram stain positive cocci in clusters
streptococci
Gram stain positive bacilli (rods)
listeria, clostridium, bacillus
What colour do gram negative organisms stain?
Pink - thinner cell wall does not uptake the crystal violet stain but takes up the methyl red stain
Examples of gram negative cocci
Neisseria gonnorhoea
Neisseria meningitidis
moraxella catarrhalis (diplococcus)
Examples of gram negative rods (bacilli)
klebsiella pneumoniae, haemophilus influenza, legionella, pseudomonas, e. coli, proteus, helicobacter pylori, salmonella, campylobacter
Examples of gram negative spirochaetes (spiral/corks screw)
leptospira (weils), borellia (lyme), treponema (syphillis)
gram stain negative vibrio (curved rod)
cholera
What colour are lactose fermenters on McConkey agar?
orange
What colour are lactose non-fermenters on McConkey agar?
pink
Examples of gram negative lactose fermenters
klebsiella, e. coli
Examples of gram negative lactose non-fermenters
shigella, salmonella, h. pylori, pseudomonas, proteus
what kind of microbe is toxoplasma gondii?
protozoa
what kind of microbe is actinomyetes israelii?
an anaerobic, gram positive rod
What happens to gram negative cocci in air?
They die - obligate anaerobes
clue cells
gardenerella vaginalis
koilocytes
