Viruses Flashcards
(31 cards)
What kind of virus is rubella?
A togavirus, single stranded RNA enclosed in a capsid
What kind of virus is HIV?
A lentivirus (retrovirus), 2 copies of single stranded RNA enclosed in a capsid
What kind of vaccine is rubella?
Live attenuated (can’t be given to pregnant women)
What does a congenital rubella infection cause?
Highest risk of transmission is in the first 12 weeks and highest risk of defects are also in the first 12 weeks, at >16 weeks there is minimal risk of deafness, at >20 weeks there is no increased risk of defects - sensorineural deafness, congenital heart disease, cataracts/glaucoma, thrombocytopenic purpura
What is german measles?
Rubella
How is rubella spread?
droplets - upper respiratory tract
How often should you test infants, if the mother decides to breastfeed?
Monthly
What is a double stranded RNA virus?
Rotavirus
What kind of microbe is rotavirus?
Doubled stranded RNA
What is a retrovirus?
An RNA virus that uses DNA for replication i.e. HIV
What are HPV 6 and 11 associated with?
Anogenital warts and low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions of the cervix
What does the gardasil vaccine defend against?
HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18
Which proteins in HPV sequence are related to malignancy?
E6 and E7
