Social: Urbanization - Breaking down of a job into smaller parts and giving people those jobs
Political: Immigration - Teach immigrants societal norms/values to create a homogenous population

Egerton Ryerson’s reforms

A
  1. established public compulsory education
  2. Formalized and standardized public education (common curriculum, teacher inspections, common textbooks and libraries in schools)
  3. Required teacher training
  4. Was a founder of the first teacher’s college
  5. Used taxation to shift costs from parents to property ( if you own a piece of
    property, the tax pays for the school)
  6. No child is compelled to religious teachings but he is a proponent of residential schools

A

Schools with terrible conditions made to “reeducate” first nations to forget their way of life in order to be integrated into western society

Davin Report

A

A report done in 1879 suggesting that first nations children should be removed from their homes to be properly educated as staying around their family will cause them to remain “savage”
