When does the Cold War start?
At the surrender of Germany but not over yet because threat of Japan.

Who are the allies at the end of WW2?
USSR, China-ish, Canada, US, France, Britain.
What is the Yalta Conference?
Rosevelt, Stalin and Churchill negotiate what they are going to do with Germany. They agree to separate Germany in 4. The goal of the Yalta conference was to install collective security.
UN is created. What is the plan for the UN after the end of WW2? Seats, council, veto.
Install collective security. USSR would join the UN.
192 seats in general assembly. Over that we have the security council. The security council has 5 permanent members, 10 non permanent. The 5 permanent have the veto. Who

Who was the last standing Axis member when the USSR was meant to join the UN and defeat said member? What agreement came with it (in favour of the USSR)

USSR would gain back territory they had lost before.
When did the US really become involved in the war effort>

How did other Allies member get China and USSR to join the deal?
Appeasement: so everyone compromised to avoid conflict.
Why was France, Uk, Canada, US, etc. aware that the deal with the USSR and China would eventually crack?
Strong movement towards communism.
Why is it necessary to have a strong Poland>
Because between Europe and USSR.
What major event caused the beginning of the Cold War?
The two atomic bombs. The USSR began being afraid of the atomic bomb, + tension risings.
What changed in the international technique between the end of WW2 and the beginning of the Cold War?
Not into appeasement and compromise anymore. Switch towards deterrence.
Describe the idea of deterrence during the Cold War:
MAD, Security dilemma, etc.
Idea that you don’t want me as an enemy. Enhance military capabilities, which started a race for arms/military and for space domination. This created the security dilemma. If I have this, then you need this, meaning I need this, etc.etc.
Created Mutually assured destruction. Russia and Us have the military capacities to eradicate the other.
What is containment?
if I let russia have Vietnam, then they’ll take Laos, then India, then all of Europe. Domino effect.
Describe the concept of spheres of influence?
Only one major power has influence over the international system.
What was the Truman doctrine?
Sending money to Greece and Turkey to “protect” them from communism.
What is the Marshall plan?
Financial aid plan designated to help Europe rebuild after the war. Stalin turned down the aid to the Eastern Europe countries so Hungary, Poland, Romania, didn’t get any.
What is Nato, when are why?
North Atlantic Treaty Organization formed by democratic nations to protect themselves from communist agression.
What is the Warsaw Pact?
Formed by the Soviet Union in response to nation. All of Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
Who was in Warsaw Pact?
Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazachstan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia.
What is a proxy war?
States front each other in another country’s soil. Does not just happen during the Cold War.
What prompted the proxy wars during the Cold War>
Nato and Warsaw pact creation
What did the collapse of communism meant on the international system?
End of bipolarity.
