HIV/AIDS Flashcards
(9 cards)
remains one of humanity’s greatest health battles - a stealthy virus that has claimed over 40 million lives while continuing to infect thousands daily.
HIV/AIDS
is a virus that targets the immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T-helper cells). It weakens the immune defense, making the body more vulnerable to infections and certain cancers.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
is the most advanced stage of HIV infection. It is
characterized by a severely compromised immune system and
the appearance of opportunistic infections or HIV-related
cancers. At this stage, the individual is at high risk of life threatening conditions.
AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)
HIV is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which is transmitted through:
1.Blood
2.Semen
3.Unprotected sexual
4.Sharing contaminated needles
5.Transfusion of infected blood
6.From mother to child during pregnancy,
7.Occupational exposure
8.Vaginal and rectal fluids
9.Breast milk
Early Stage (Acute HIV)
FEVER
SORE THROAT
SWOLLEN LYMPH NODES
HEADACHE
RASH
MUSCLE AND JOINTS PAIN
May last several years with no noticeable symptoms Gradual weakening of the immune system
Chronic Stage (Asymptomatic or Latency Stage)
AIDS Stage
-Persistent Fever
-Rapid weight loss
-Chronic diarrhea
-Night sweats
-Fatigue
-Sores on the mouth,
anus, or genitals
-Pneumonia or other
infections
-Memory loss, depression
and other neurological
disorders
PREVENTION
1.Using condoms
2.Getting tested regularly
3.Avoiding sharing
4.Taking preventive medicines
5.Ensuring pregnant women with HIV get
treatment
6.Starting HIV treatment
1.ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) helps suppress the virus,
allowing the immune system to recover
2.Reduces viral load to undetectable levels (Undetectable =
Untransmittable)
3.Allows people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives
4.Treatment is lifelong and must be taken consistently
