Homeostasis Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is homeostasis?
The regulation of internal conditions to maintain a stable environment.
Why is homeostasis important?
To maintain optimal conditions for enzyme action and cell function.
What does the human body regulate?
Temperature, blood glucose levels, water content.
What are receptors?
Cells that detect stimuli (changes in the environment).
What are effectors?
Muscles or glands that bring about a response.
What is a reflex?
A response to a stimuli without conscious thought
What is the pathway of a reflex arc?
Stimulus → Receptor → Sensory Neuron → Relay Neuron → Motor Neuron → Effector → Response
What is the central nervous system (CNS)?
The brain and spinal cord.
What is the role of sensory neurons?
To carry impulses from receptors to the CNS.
What is the role of motor neurons?
To carry impulses from the CNS to effectors.
