Homeostasis, Cell Struct. & Function Flashcards
(7 cards)
Define Homeostasis
Maintaining the balance of an organisms inside body.
Examples of homeostasis
An example is the plasma membrane setting a boundary of what enters and leaves the cell.
Another example is balancing the inside of our body.
(7.1) What are eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic- Contains a nucleus and other organelles.
Prokaryotic- Does not contain a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles.
One difference is prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler than eukaryotic cells.
What is selective permeability?
They will allow some substances to pass while keeping others out. This also controls how, when, and how much of each substances exit and enter the plasma membrane.
What is the phospholipid bilayer?
Its two layers of phospholipids to allow the membrane to survive in water conditions. It has polar heads facing outside and nonpolar tails facing outside the cell.
What is the role of cholesterol in the plasma membrane?
Cholesterol is non-polar; prevents the fatty acid tails of the phospholipid bilayer from sticking together.
Cholesterol contributes to the fluidity of the membrane.
What are the roles of carbohydrates in the plasma membrane?
Carbohydrates define the cell’s characteristics.
Help cells identify chemical signals.
Carbohydrates attached to proteins are called glycoproteins.
Carbohydrates attached to lipids are called glycolipids.
