homeostasis - negative feeback Flashcards
(10 cards)
where are the adrenal glands located
at the top of the kidneys
what hormone do these glands produce and when
produces adrenaline in time of fear or stress
what is one of the main effects of adrenaline
increase of heart rate
what happens when the heart is beating faster
more oxygen and glucose is delivered by the blood to the Brian and muscles
what does this prepare the body for
to either fight or run away - “fight or flight”
where is the thyroid gland found
the base of the neck
what hormone is released here
releases thyroxine
what are the two main effects of thyroxine
- stimulates basic metabolic rate
- growth and development
how is the amount of thyroxine in the blood controlled
negative feedback
explain the negative feedback for thyroxine in the body
- the levels of thyroxine is measure by the brain, when these levels drop the pituitary gland releases TSH into the blood
- TSH then triggers the thyroid gland to produce more thyroxine
- the increase level of thyroxine is detected by the brain and so the pituitary gland stop releasing TSH
- as the TSH levels fall they thyroid gland releases less thyroxin
