Hormones And Negative Feedback Flashcards
(15 cards)
What does the endocrine system consist of?
Glands
What does all of the endocrine system do?
Secrete hormones which are passed to the blood and spread through the body.
What do receptors do?
Specific to the hormone, the hormone acts as a signal to trigger changes inside the cell.
What does the pituitary gland do?
- Makes multiple hormones which directly tell the body what to do.
- Tell other glands to release their hormones.
The pituitary gland is not part of the brain but rather?
Attached to the brain.
Which hormones control our blood glucose concentration?
Glucagon and insulin.
What does blood glucose concentration mean in simple terms?
Amount of sugar in our blood stream.
What is the danger if our blood glucose concentration is too high?
It can cause damage to our tissues
Where is our blood glucose concentration increase detected?
Pancreas
What does insulin do?
Bind to receptors on certain cells, to tell them to take in some glucose.
Which two cells take in lots of glucose?
Liver and muscle cells
Definition of glycogen
Long term storage form of glucose
Where is glucagon released?
Pancreas
Instead of reducing blood glucose, glycogen?
Pancreas detect low concentration of blood glucose and secrets glucagon into the blood stream.
Why is our blood glucose concentration never exactly consistent?
Insulin and glucagon is always being released.
