Rationing and shortages

Starvation and malnutrition caused the death of of more than 20 million people during the WW2
Governments imposed rationing to avoid shortages. Rationing during the war meant that people had a specific amount of food or of another commodity
In 1940, the British government introduced food rationing
The government encouraged people to grow vegetables in their own gardens. Many public parks were also used for this purpose
It was not until the 1950 that most commodities came off the ration
Bombing and evacuations
Aerial bombing were commonplace in WW2
Especially devastating as they heavily targeted civilian populations
The most significant episode of strategic bombing were the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945
Solutions to bombings
Many people had Anderson shelters in their gardens. Small steel structures designed to be buried in the garden and covered with earth (helped absorb the shock) and gave some protection
In September 1939 the first evacuation of mothers and children to the countryside took place, there were 3 in total. The countryside was safer due to less bombing
Propaganda
Governments sought to heavily control information
This was still done using the press and propaganda posters but also film and radio
The cas of Thessaloniki, Greece
Was home to a huge Jewish community
Occupied by German forces on April 9, 1941
It is estimated that less than 5% escaped deportation
