How to make introductions Flashcards

1
Q

What generally occurs during an introduction?

A

Introduction of names/roles and how they relate to the third party followed by physical contact e.g. handshaking if appropriate. You may also decide to show them around in order to put them at ease in an unfamiliar environment and thus provoking best person/family centred practice.

Q

What constitutes a good introduction when you are in a new environment and do not know anyone?

A

When someone is in a new environment and doesn’t know anybody, it is best to be as approachable as possible. This can be achieved through nonverbal communication such as open body language and having eye contact on the same level if appropriate. Make sure to clarify after you finish explaining information to check their level of comprehension and answer any questions they may have in a kind and considerate manner.

Q

What makes introductions different for a health professional?

A

The health professional is in a position of power and must be aware that the third party entering an unfamiliar environment for the first time may be anxious and stressed. This may effect comprehension of information thus it is important to clarify with the third party in their own words.
