Human activity and ecosystems Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
How does bioaccumulation negatively affect ecosystems?
A
- Pollutants are poisonous or toxic —–> cause weakness, illness, sterility or death
- Imbalances within ecosystems
- Loss of biodiversity
2
Q
How does biomagnification negatively affect ecosystems?
A
- Amplifies the effects of bioaccumulation ——> leads to imbalances within ecosystems & loss of biodiversity
- Human health problems arise from consuming organisms containing pollutants
3
Q
How does global warming negatively affect ecosystems?
A
- More severe weather events —-> limit organism survival
- Habitat loss (ice melt & damage to coral reefs)
4
Q
How does deforestation negatively affect ecosystems?
A
- Loss of biodiversity - Trees serve as habitats for a wide range of organisms.
- Wide-scale land degradation - loss of nutrients, increased levels of soil erosion, increased levels of soil salinity.
- Global warming - trees are a source of oxygen & remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
5
Q
Identify ways to reduce the impacts of bioaccumulation
A
- Removal of pollutants already in ecosystems
- Limit the amount of pollutants entering ecosystems through good waste management
6
Q
Identify ways to reduce the impacts of biomagnification
A
- Raising public awareness of health issues arising from eating contaminated organisms
- Reduce use of persistence chemicals (e.g. DDT)
7
Q
Identify ways to reduce the impacts of deforestation
A
- Decrease amount of deforestation taking place
- Replant trees (reforestation)
- Reduce deforestation & Increase reforestation
8
Q
Identify ways to reduce the impacts of global warming
A
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions - use alternative energy sources
