Within a Christian marriage ceremony the couple exchange rings , as an outward symbol of love and commitment.

The Bible refers to avoiding sexual din and Christians interpret this to mean either sex outside of marriage, adultery, promiscuity or other sexual relationships which go against the church teachings.

The Bible contains direct references to homosexuality which seem to say it is wrong. For example, Romans 1:27 states “Men committed indecent acts with other men and received themselves the due penalty for their perversion”.

Many Christians believe that when a couple gets married they are joined together by God. Therefore they do not believe that divorce has the power to destroy Gods bond of marriage.

Catholics believe that divorce cannot separate a couple joined together by God in marriage but will allow couples who were not in a ‘true marriage’ to have their marriage annulled (cancelled).

Why might some Christians believe remarriage is acceptable?

Once a person is divorced they no longer have nay ties to their former partner so nothing is stopping them from making a new commitment. Biblical teaching on forgiveness means that some Christians believe that divorced people should be forgiven and allowed a fresh start and a new marriage.

Most Catholics still believe that reproduction is the only purpose of sex, despite many Christians believing that as well as to produce children, sexual relationships are intended to bring pleasure and intimacy.

Marriage is a religious ceremony of great significance, a visible form of grace.

Depending on their views they may be accepting towards the person and help them accept themselves and come out or they might persuade them to pray to get rid of the homosexual feelings or tell them not to have homosexual sex as the act is a sin.

A civil partnership is the legal bonding of two people of the same sex, the couple have the same rights as a married couple but their bonding is not recognised as an official marriage.
