led by external specialists and takes place away from work. the location is specifically chosen for the type of training.
advantages of off the job training
- broad range of skills
- often uses expert trainers who have a wide knowledge
- business will only need to pay for the course and not also loose the output of the employee
disadvantages of off the job training
- costs are high
- wages are paid but no work is done
- additional qualifications mean the employee can easily leave and find another job
advantages of on the job training
- individual tuition is given and at the place of work
- ensure there is some production from the worker while training
- cost less than off the job training
- training is tailored to the specific needs of the business
disadvantages of on the job training
- traitors bad habits may pass on to the trainee
- trainer will become less productive as they are showing the trainee what do do instead of getting on with their job.

- helps new employees settle quicker
- workers are less likely to make mistakes
- may be a legal requirement to give health and safety training at the start of a job
disadvantages of induction training
- time consuming
- wages are paid but no work is being done
- delays the start of the employee commencing their job
