A

Importance of Truth (Sat)
Sikhism places a high value on truthfulness, which suggests that open and honest communication is important.
Golden Temple attack (1984): the government declared a media
blackout, and all details pertaining to number of deaths, circumstances, perpetrators, atrocities, and level of destruction of the sacred space (Golden Temple) were banned. Media across the world were prevented from getting the full story.

A

Catholics: believe censorship is appropriate when it comes to protecting people—especially children—from immoral content.
Liberals: oppose censorship - it hides the truth, covers up injustice and manipulates information.

A

Completely against.
“There is no Hindu, no Muslim.” (GGS)
Everyone is equal regardless of religion, race, gender, caste - “All children of Waheguru.”
Creation of the Khalsa (especially panj piare) shows that everyone is equal as each of the blessed 5 were from a different caste.

A

Firmly against.
“There is neither Jew nor Gentile… for you are all one in Christ Jesus” - means that social divisions are meaningless before God.
Jesus’ core teaching: “love your neighbor as yourself” - this is used to oppose racism, sexism and homophobia.

Reject prejudice because it lacks reason, evidence, and empathy.

“Chardi Kala” which essentially means to be in a state of
relentless hope and optimism - always have personal conviction for your faith (despite obstacles like prejudice, censorship and abuse).

A

Guru’s did not accept the notion of caste and how it affected ones status in life and consequently how rich or poor they
were.
Sikhs have no problem with having wealth.
Guru Nanak preached Kirt Karni and Vand Chakna – honest work and share with others.
Concept of DASWANDH (10%of your earnings should be given to charity) is important.

A

Those who have wealth have a duty to help those who don’t.
Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus: wealth ≠ spiritual favour, poverty ≠ sin, morality and actions are the only thing God will judge.

A

Poverty as a man-made issue - it is our role to reduce suffering and create a fairer society.
Wealth should be used responsibly: share, pay taxes.
All should still have access to human rights, healthcare, education (no matter wealth).
