What are Sikhi beliefs towards the family?
Institution of family encouraged by the Guru’s. Nine of the ten Guru’s were married
GGS compares relationship of the creator (God) to creation (humanity and Earth) to that of a father and child. God is called both father and mother (Guru Arjan GGS103)
What are Sikh duties in a family?
Sikhs disagree with those who opt out of family responsibilities for
spiritual/religious reasons (this use to be a Hindu custom the Guru’s disliked)

Parents are role models, you must lead by example; your example should come from the Guru’s

Families are a gift from God: created by God to provide love, support and stability - reflects God’s love

It is a religious duty to bring children up in the faith. The family is called the “domestic church”- the first place where faith is lived and taught for a child.
Parents must teach a child to go to church and of the importance the rites of passage (baptism).

The purpose of marriage is so individuals have companionship and love on their spiritual journey (as well as to raise a family together).
Through a marriage the atmas of the couple merge to continue their spiritual journey: “They alone are called husband and wife, who have one light in two bodies,” (Guru Granth Sahib, 788)

Cohabitation is not allowed in Sikhism.

The Guru Granth Sahib mentions that an adulterer will ‘suffer in this life or the next’.

Divorce carries a lot of social stigma.
However Sikhs accept that sometimes marriages
fail.

Catholics: Don’t recognise divorce. Marriage is a lifelong commitment and a sacrament which shouldn’t be broken or dissolved. Breaking solemn promises made to God and the Christian family.
CofE and Liberals: Should be avoided but acceptable in some cases (eg: abuse).

Acceptable if a relationship is no longer healthy or respectful.
What are Christian views on remarriage?
Catholics: Not accepted. Jesus said: “Anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
CofE and Liberals: Allowed as it is legal, but it is up to the ministers discretion.
What are Sikh views on remarriage?
Sikhs can re-marry in a Gurdwara if they wish to.
What are Humanist views on remarriage?
Completely acceptable, in order to find happiness and love again.
What are Christian views on the purpose of sex?
Sex is for procreation, unity and an expression of love.
Sex is a gift from God and is sacred.
Promiscuity is a sin as it devalues the act of sex.
