Humming-Bird Flashcards
(10 cards)
themes
dystopia (opposite of utopia)
natural world
uncorrupted landscapes
energy and vitality (embodies in the humming bird)
beginning of time, empty, bleak, desolate, assonance drags and adds to eeriness, noise subsiding, earth is settling, after flux and change, personification
In that most awful stillness, that only gasped and hummed
contrast to stillness, bird has energy and vitality
Humming-birds raced down the avenues
primitive, basic, no real life form, effort gone into creation, some life but no vibrancy,
Before anything had a soul
half inanimate
once we were slab of rock, blank, only beginning to be crafted into something beautiful, but this hummingbird, in a mircle of evolution, appeared on the face of the earth, before their appearance life was like a dull, heavy slab of metal or rock, however it was like a small glinting spark chipped off from it
This little bit chipped off in brilliance
whizzing through the slow, vast, succulent stems
one beautiful thing in this world, symbol of energy and vitality in this scene
flashed ahead of creation
how they acquired water
pierced the slow vegetable veins with his long beak
frightening, beast type figure
jabbing, terrifying monster
We don’t see the hummingbird as he truly is/was, which was a terrifying monster, but instead as a fragile, pretty, harmless bird, bc were looking at it wrong, interesting metaphor for us not seeing hummbingbirds true identity
We look at him through the wrong end of the long telescope of Time
he would be larger and we would be in danger/risk, iront, have we stopped the beauty of the natural world? is modern world lacking? we’ve taken over/urbanisation,
Luckily for us
