Symptoms of HD
Involuntary movt (chorea) Postural instability (LOB, Falls) Problems w/ memory retrieval, executive function, math abilities Irritability/restless/outburst/moody Depression Hallucinations/paranoia social w/drawl insomnia Dysphagia (slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, nutritional risk)
Meds for HD
Tetrabenazine (suppress movt)
Antipsychotics
Antidepressants
Characteristics of early stage
Subtle changes in mood/irratability/depression/problem solving
less capable of ADL and work activities
Subtle chorea/invol movt
Middle stage HD characteristics
Med utilized to relieve invol movt
Sig memory and decision making skills impairment
Unable to maintain paid employment
sig impact of daily function
Later stage HD characteristics
Complete dependence
non ambulatory
choking is a sig concern
severe chorea and develops into rigidity
often unable to speak (can still comprehend language and aware of fam)
What does death occur from in HD
Secondary cause like choking or pneumonia
