hyde Flashcards

1
Q

context for hyde

A

Lambroscos theory of avatism- hyde shares a lot of physical components with lombrscos idea of primal features representing a genetic criminal- his appearance convicts him as evil in a phsygionomy driven society
Fin de siecle- he plays onto peoples fears of corrupt scientific developemnts, bending biblical prophesies of transformation, and also of darwins devolution, constant use of inhuman and insepcific pronouns
Class standards- if we see jekyll as an isolated, single member and then invitably a lower class- his actions and murder represent the unscrutinised standards for the dirtier lower class- carews murder being an uprising, if we see hyde as an extension of jekyll and so upper class the trmapling and murder cna represent the opresssion of others by the selfish upper class
Freudian- in a freudian mindset he is a vehicle for the ID, popular theory at the time- novel was PRE FREUD

Q

troglodyrytic

A

term used to refer to the appearance of a cave dwelller, his behaviour and character even upon first meeting erases the years of human advancements espececially in an era of industrial and worldwide revolution
he is so isolated from the rest of sciety that he has not progressed, links into the theory of avatism

Q

it was like some dammed juggernaut

A

contextually a juggernaut was something dragged in a hindu sacrifice that was famsouly unstoppable and would phsyically crush anything in its way, much like hyde upon introduction
on a deeper level it was a way of sacrifice and could be symbolic of how jekyll has sacrificed HIMSELF in order to become this utterly destructive figure
the unhaltable nature of the juggernaut shows hydes impulsive and non conformist attitude
it is an inspecific pronoun that dehumanises hyde into a creature rather than a respected or even regonised man
dammed biblically means he is cursed upon
a juggernaut is also a pagan god, which is located outside of the conformist western world and so others hyde and implies barbarianism

Q

something wrong with his appearance
something downright detsestable
i scarce know why

A

even utterson, the vehicle for upper class logical conformism is inexplicably driven to anger
his description plays into the fin de sieicle trope of the unknwon as no one is able to fully place the source of his threatning appearnace even utterson with the upmost logical outlook- he even searches for reasoning and scarce knows why. hes more so an atmosphere than a personm his evil is personal but seems to convey the most primal form of human
the outburst in utterson is scary as it may show how his represnattion of the freudian ID inspirses others to emulate this or it awakens it in themselves, this is why the fear of hyde is specific to each person
the alliteration of ‘d’ creates a feeling of repulsion as it is adibly a sour spitting noise
the anaphoric representatipn shows logical utterson reaching for answers and being unable to grasp the core of his evil, it is used throughout the entire textt o show the indecisive unknowable nature of hyde

foul soul

A

god gave humans a soul in genesis very famously by breathing life into adam, the idea that hdyes is rotting and has been rejected shows the satankc qualities of his character

Q

black sneering coolness

A

stevenon actutually uses a heavy light motif in the prescence of hyde as he is frequently seen with the colour black, whilst other characters usually with no nameable colour are percieved as pale and white- the darknesss in jekyll is such a stark contrast to others high morality that it shows even more the juxtaposition between conformist men and his freudian ID persona
sneering implies a rude charactertic whilst coolness is uncanny due to his rage

Q

child of hell

A

this oxymoron is used by his own counterpart jekyll, it is a shock as children are biblically pure and uncorrupted whilst hell is the depths of evil, shocks the auiednce how hyde is able to completely subvert all societal standarsds and morality
hyde is youthful as he has been untouched by jekylls need to conform

Q

hyde as an atagonist

A

a popular gothic trope was a typical supernatural villain such as dracula or frankenstien, this is why hyde is interesting as he subverts the normal trope by focussing on phsycological evil in men rather than viewing evil as a disjointed dark figure per ce
he confirms contempoarary fears of the evil being from within- he is immoral and non conforming and yet comes from a highly respectable gentlemnnan
the barrier between j and h is semi permiable, they cannot truly be separted as characters just how jekyll could not truly rid himself of his primal ID, upper class and society as a whole cannot banish a non conformist side or they may become overbearing
this would strike audiences firstly due to fears in fin de siecle but also because due to characters like john hunter and jack the ripper it was becoming increasingly unclear who the real societal threats were

Q

ape like fury
jumped like a monkey

A

plays into lombroscos theory of avatism and regression as he is frequently likened to not just any animal but specifically primates, darwinism was a key threat at the time and stevenson highlights the conflict between conformist religion and the belief in evolutionism

younger lighter happier

A

highlights the tempting aspect of hyde as whilst conforming to soceities phsygomony=ist standards is physicalllye xhausting hydes repression has allowed his indulgence in pleasures to alight a youthful joy that jekyll cannot turn away from

snarled aloud into a savage laugh

A

savage could play into racist imperialist fears of the ‘other’, minorities and non brittishness
it also along with snarled dehumnaises hyde- he is degenerate and is acting outisde of societal morals
darwinism, devolution and avatism

Q

clothes hung formlessly on my shrunken limbs

A

hydes power is fed by evil, the more jekyll indulges in the youthful and freeing pleasure of his id the more he grows and becomes less conformist- hence why his mateiralistic items, a symbol of his upper class place, do not fit
hydes limbs are shrunken as he is an avatistic ugly character, but also becaus ehe is smaller and slighter due to the years of repression
bit of a macbeth allusion here, as shakespear consnatly sees macbeaths corruption as a metaphor through his shrunken clothes, steveson is drawing connotations to a popular villain who deemed himself honourable but was harbouring evil

my devil had been long caged he came out roaring

A

his devil refers to the freudian id and the need to unleash mans primal instincts, devil is extremist voacbs with links to biblical evil
he warns against the repression of ones id as it will becomes increasingly tempting as age progresses due to its preserved naivity and youth
roaring is animalistic and lionesque
