Q

hell/ devil through hyde paragraph

A

‘my devil was long caged, he came out roaring’ his devil refers to the freudian id and the need to unleash mans primal instincts, devil is extremist voacbs with links to biblical evil he warns against the repression of ones id as it will becomes increasingly tempting as age progresses due to its preserved naivity and youth, roaring is animalistic and lionesque
- indeed the idea that ones id due to repression throguh society can become ‘smaller, slighter, younger’ accentuates the temptation of evil particularly with age, drawing connotations to the devils temptation, the tricolon highlights just how intruiging indorsing ones primal aspects is
- ‘some dammed juggeraunt’ contextually a juggernaut was something dragged in a hindu sacrifice that was famsouly unstoppable and would phsyically crush anything in its way, much like hyde upon introduction
on a deeper level it was a way of sacrifice and could be symbolic of how jekyll has sacrificed HIMSELF in order to become this utterly destructive figure. the unhaltable nature of the juggernaut shows hydes impulsive and non conformist attitude. dammed biblically means he is cursed upon,a juggernaut is also a pagan god, which is located outside of the conformist western world and so others hyde and implies barbarianism
- ‘child of hell’ this oxymoron is used by his own counterpart jekyll, it is a shock as children are biblically pure and uncorrupted whilst hell is the depths of evil, shocks the auiednce how hyde is able to completely subvert all societal standarsds and morality
hyde is youthful as he has been untouched by jekylls need to conform
- ‘foul soul’ in genesis god breathes life into adam through his nostrils providing him with a soul, he is defying god and hence siding with satan
- its important to see how the relationship between jekyll and hyde is semi permiable and though they have dif tratits they are symbolically one man, the temptation of evil is not as a gothic trope a singular superntual individual but a real fear in all of our lives

Q

sceince vs religion structure

A

In the industrialist era of society there was a huge technoligical growth thatalighted fears of the unknown and drove rifts between those ambitious and driven by advancements and those minority now of church goers who felt new theories were decontructing the basis of their beliefs- this conflict is summarised in the broken friendship between lanyon and jekyll
- Lanyon, a man who balances his physical sceince with his relationship with god, believes that his soured relations with jekyll are because jekyll ‘become too fanciful for me’- the temporial delexis in became implies the rift between the two was a long coming thing and exentuates the length of which conflicting opinions can destory any bond, whilst the frickative alliteration in ‘fanciful for’ implies both a sense of falsity and highlights the disgust lanyon holds for his once friend. Here he also depicts his interest in physcoligcal sceince as a ‘cerberal disease’ this imagery implies a distain for new sceintificn findings as if it is polluted and mnetally warped. As well as this he seems to pass it off as ‘unscientific balderdash’- these are rude and damming words tha clearly portray a lack of respect
- the twos relations, and hence the rift between science and religion, couldve ‘estranged damon and pythias’- this is mythical allusions to two greek characters like them in a bachelor socety whom were inseperable, its clear its viewed that ideological differences such as those between them are unmendable
- upon discovering the truth behind the metaphysical sceintific developements as stevenson feared were occuring in the real world- lanyon is ‘shaken to his roots’ meaning the very basis of his beleifs that held up his world had been destroyed, his horror leaves him on his death bed a metaphor for the distruction of the church but he claims he shull ‘die incredulous’ christian men do not want to recognise the advancements and also fear it is stepped beyond gods willing amount, indeed jekyll is a promethian character who shull be punished
- when he discovers the trth of jekyll he dropps to his knees almost in confession and cries out to god in disbelief

Q

paragraph idea for reuptable men in religion idk rough

A
  • RELIGION IS PROPRTIONAL TO SOCIETAL CONFORMISM AND RESPECT
  • uttersons night is dictated by the church bells
  • jekyll glasps his hands to god and drops to his knees in confession
  • ‘he was no less distinguished to religion’
-‘the powers of Hyde’ grown at the sick lines of jekyll’ implies that religious and moral richeouness can act as a defense against biblical inner evil, and it’s only at the death of a man’s religious morality that his devil is able to prosper
