Q

hydes violence

A
  • cahracterises him as a clear gothic villain and threat as he is the only person who carries any violent threat thoughout the novella
  • ‘stampled calmy’ shows him to be volatile and threatineing, oxymoronic language
  • ‘ape like fury’
-‘hydes violence works to build tension and fear and hence play in to gothic conventioned of a terroifying othered villain. it also helps emulate the true identity of mans freudian id and the dark violence possesed in all of us
  • ‘it was like some dammed juggernaut’
  • ‘great flame of ager’ symbolises his volatile character, this also has natural connotations to basic nature which may imply his violent character is intrinsically woven into the behaviours of man

Q

violence as violeating innocence

A
  • exposure to horrors is seen to violate and rob people of their innocence, in the novella the sole victims of violent acts are the weaker members of soceity, providing implications fromm stevenson that violence aims to expose those weakest to atrocities
  • the maid and the young girl are the sole female representation in a bachelor focussed novella- the girl objectified as she is trampled over and is only referred to as ‘the child’
  • the maid is seen to be tearu and panicked
  • carrew thogh not awoman is a fragile elder whom is quite thoroughly womanised in the novella, he is seej to be an ‘aged gentlemen’ equiptw with ‘white hair’- this connotes to biblical morality and likens him to an angel
-overall the violent nature of hyde abuses and takes advantage of only the most soceitally weak
