what is the ABCDE management for hypoglycaemia

A

A - Patent
B - Increased RR over 20mark (norm = 12-20), decreased Sp02)
C - Tachycardia, hypertension, pale/pallor, clammy
D - ACVPU - confused, blood glucose less than 4 mmols - DEFG!!!
E - slurred speech, shaking, aggressive, may appear drunk.

What is the management of a hypoglycaemic attack? (4)

A
  • 02 - 15ltrs/min, if pt allows
  • if pt conscious, administer 10-20g of oral glucose (repeat this every 10-15 mins)
  • if pt unconscious administer 1 mg of glucagon (inject), 02 as before and call 999
  • when pt regains consciousness, administer 10-20g more oral glucose to replenish reserves - V IMPORTANT

IN an unconscious/uncooperative (IM injection!) child what are the dosages facing with a hypoglycaemic attack?

A

2-8 years (body weight is less than 25kg) - 0.5mg
9-17 body weight is more than or equal to 25kg - 1mg (standard adult dose for IM injection)
