Determined by socioeconomic factors, individual abilities, personal characteristics and opportunities to which persons are exposed.

Related to life roles and noted that individuals express their self-concepts through choice of vocation

Growth (to age 13)- developing vocational self-concept

Exploration (14 - 24)- narrowing career choices

Establishment (25- 44)- permanent occupation, but maybe changes in position or status

Maintenance (45- 64)

Decline or Disengagement (65+)- mediation of self-concept required
