define ICP
multi-factorial condition characterised by itching without a rash and abnormal liver function blood tests
itching in pregnancy affects 25% of women but ICP affetcs 0.7%
higher rates seen in women with indian pakistani and chilean heritage (RCOG, 2022)
how does ICP develop
in late 2nd and 3rd trimester, then resolves after birth of placenta
more common during winter months
multiple pregnancy
older maternal age
family and personal history of obstetric cholestasis
symptoms of ICP
intense itching without a rash usually hands and feet
jaundice, pale stools, dark urine, right upper quadrant pain, tiredness
antenatal care: screnning for ICP
blood tests: serum bile acids, LFTs
ask about presence of itching: location, rash, risk factors and symptoms associated with ICP
