Identification Of Common Gasses Flashcards
(4 cards)
Test for hydrogen
Squeaky pop test
Place a lit splint close to the mouth of a test tube containing a gass
If the gass is hydrogen a squeaky pop sound will be produced
This is because hydrogen burns rapidly in the presence if oxygen to give h²o
Identification of oxygen
Insert a glowing splint into a test tube containing a gass
If the gass us oxygen the splint will relight
Identification of carbon dioxide
Take an aqueous solution of limewater and bubble through the gass
If its carbon dioxide the lime water solution will go from clear to cloudy
Identification of chlorine
Insert damp litmus paper into test tube containing the gass
If the gass is chlorine the litmus paper will change from red to white
