2
Q

How to work out how pure a substance is

A

Pure substances have specific melting and boiling points so the closer the values of your experiment are to those in the data book, the more pure the sample is

Q

Formulations

A

Each component helps decide what the mixtures overall properties are

Each component must be present in precisely measure quantitys

Eg
Fuels
Medicines

Q

2 phases in Chromatography

A

Mobile phase: substance is picked duo and carried by a mobile phase ( the solvent)

Stationary phase: the mobile phase then moves through a stationary phase
( the paper)

Q

Separation on substances in Chromatography

A

Depends on distribution of substances across the 2 phases

A substance moves far if its more attracted to the mobile phase

A substances doesn’t move far if it’s attracted to the stationary phase

Different components can be equally attracted to a solvent so the number of spots a mixture produces can vary depending on solvent used

Q

Paper Chromatography

A

The bottom of the Chromatography paper ( containing the stationary phase) is dipped into the solvent ( mobile phase).

The solvent travels up the paper and picks up and transports the substances being tested up the paper

The substances that have travelled the furthest are the most soluble. They are minimally attracted to the Chromatography paper
