Accommodations
assistance or changes to the learning process to allow the student to learn the same material as others (Changes HOW they learn)
Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
an educational right of all children to receive instruction tailored to their needs at no cost to their family by the local education agency (LEA)
Active Listening
The focused and intentional act of hearing and understanding what others say
Local Education Agency (LEA)
the education agency responsible for the school
Paraprofessional / Para
educators who are not certified teachers, but who provide direct instruction, behavior management, and other related educational services under the direction of the classroom or special education teacher
Modifications
changes made to the curriculum or instructional practices to alter the expectations or performance criteria for students, often used to support learners with special needs by providing a more accessible and tailored educational experience
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
the classroom or setting where the child can be successful, with or without accommodations, and with typical age/grade level peers
Review of Existing Data (REED)
a mandated review of all existing evaluation data including the initial evaluation, any re-evaluations, classroom observations, and standardized testing to determine if dismissal of services is necessary
Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP)
Describes the child’s current skills and abilities and how his disability may impact his ability to learn. Used during the IEP process.
Collaborative Relationship
A relationship in which all members are working together towards a desired outcome
Attending Behavior
Use of verbal and non-verbal cues by listeners that demonstrate they are listening with attention to what is being said
Response to Intervention (RtI)
a process to monitor and measure student progress in the general education curriculum after instructional intervention is provided
Empathy
the ability to understand and share the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of another person, often leading to a compassionate response and connection with their emotional state
