immobility Flashcards
(22 cards)
Individuals who have an active lifestyles or who are faced with inactivity because of illness or injury or other for many problems that can affect major body systems
effects of immobility
that demineralization process, the bones becomes spongy and may gradually deform and fracture easily
osteoporosis
Unused muscles ____ (decrease in size), losing most of the strength and normal function
atrophy
when the muscle fibers are not able to shorten length lengthens, eventually a contracture(permanent shortening pf the muscle) forms. limiting joint mobility
contractures
Refers to holding the breath and straining against a closed glottis
valsalva maneuver
when the immobile person attempts to sit or stand the reconstricting mechanism and fails to function properly resulting to the person feels dizzy or lightheaded, and may even faint
orthostatic (postural) hypotension
The skeletal muscles do not contract sufficiently and the muscle atrophy. The skeletal muscle can no longer assist in pumping blood back to the heart against gravity
venous vasodilation and stasis
Most likely to occur around the sacrum or heels of a client who sits up in bed or in the feet and lower legs of a client who sits in a chair
dependent edema
a clot that is loosely attached to an inflamed vein wall
thrombophlebitis
The collapse of lobe or of an entire lung
atelectasis
caused by static respiratory secretion can severely impair oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange in the alveoli and is fairly common cause of death among weekend mobile individuals, especially heavy smokers
pneumonia
Refers to the sum of all the physical and chemical process by which living substance is formed in maintain, and by which energy is made available for used by the body
metabolism
The minimal energy expanded for the maintenance of this process
basal metabolic rate
loss of appetite
anorexia
stoppage or slowdown of flow urine
urinary stasis
with immobility and the resulting excessive amount of calcium in the urine, this balance is no longer maintained.
The urine becomes more alkaline and the calcium salts precipitate out as a crystals to form _____ (stones)
renal calculi
The organism most commonly causing urinary track infection is
escherichia coli
backward flow = urinary reflux
The contaminated during from an overly distended bladder backs up into the pelvis to contaminate the kidney pelvis as well
urinary reflux
constipation is a frequent problem for immobilized clients because of decrease peristalsis and colon motility
gastrointestinal system
The skin can atrophy as a result of prolonged immobility
reduced skin turgor
normal blood circulation relies on muscle activity of skin breakdown and formation of pressure ulcers can occur
Skin breakdown
due to a decline in production of mood-elevating substances, such as endorphins, people experience negative effects on mood with unable to engage in physical activity
psychoneurologic system
