Immune System Flashcards
(14 cards)
Immune system
Function :
Protect against pathogens, foreign substances, & cancer.
Innate ( non-specific) immunity;
Skin , mucus, stomach acid, phagocytes.
Adaptive ( specific ) immunity:
B & T cells (memory).
Antigen :
Any foreign substance that triggers an immune response.
Neutrophils :
First responders to infection.
Macrophages:
Engulf pathogens & present antigens.
T Cells ( Cell - Mediated Immunity) :
Helper T cells ( CD4 ) : Activate immune cells.
Cytotoxic T cells (CD8): Destroy infected cells.
B Cells ( Humoral Immunity ) :
Produce antibodies.
5 Antibodies ( Immunoglobulins):
1) IgG = Most abundant ( long-term immunity).
2) IgA = Found in secretions ( tears, saliva, breast milk ).
3) IgM = First response antibody.
4) IgE = Allergy response.
5) IgD = B cell activation.
Active immunity;
From infection or vaccine.
Passive immunity;
From mother ( placenta/breastmilk) or injection (antibodies)
Histamine:
Causes inflammation & allergy symptoms.
Autoimmune diseases :
Immune system attacks own body ( e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis).
