Respiratory system Flashcards
(15 cards)
Respiratory System
Main function :
Oxygen in , carbon dioxide out , sound production, pH balance.
Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli
( external respiration) .
Surfactant :
Prevent alveolar collapse.
Breathing control :
Medulla oblongata (detects CO2 levels).
Diaphragm contracts — Inspiration ( inhale) ,
Diaphragm relaxes — Expiration (exhale).
Right lung has 3 lobes .
Left lung has 2 lobes.
Pleural fluid
reduces , friction during breathing.
Oxygen transport :
Carried by hemoglobin in RBCs.
CO2 transport :
Mostly in bicarbonate ion (HC03-) form in blood.
Hyperventilation
— Decreases CO2 — Increased blood pH ( alkalosis).
Hypoventilation
— Increases CO2 — Decreased blood pH ( acidosis) .
COPD :
Chronic bronchitis + Emphysema ( smoking - related).
Asthma :
Inflammation of airways — Wheezing, difficulty breathing.
Cystic fibrosis :
Thick mucus buildup ( genetic disease).
Trachea — Bronchi — Bronchioles
— Alveoli ( gas exchange site).
