Immune system Flashcards
(16 cards)
immunity
the ability to resist infection
pathogen
a micro organism that causes disease
skin role gd
physical barrier; clots/ platelets, sebum/ sweat-bactericidal
mucous membranes
line tracts- trap & attack bacteria cell walls with lysozymes
complement protiens
produced by liver, activated by infection, results in bursting of pathogens
interferons
prevent viral replication& limit virus spread
specific defence system
bodys particular response to particular pathogens
antigen
a foreign molecule that stimulates the production of an antibody
antibody
protein produced by lymphocytes in response to a specific antigen
induced immunity
the ability to resist infection caused by specific pathogens via the production of antibodies
active immunity
the production of ones own antibodies in response to foreign antigens that enter the body- develops after an infection/ vaccination- longlasting
vaccine
non disease causing dose of a pathogen which triggers the production of antibodies
passive immunity
individuals given antibodies formed by another organism-short term
natural passive immunity
baby gets antigens from its mother
artificial passive immunity
injection with antibodies from other organism- used when immediate response needed eg tetanus
t-lymphocyte activator
thymosin
