Immunity Flashcards
(5 cards)
Describe how antibodies work
Antibodies are specific to a virus/pathogen.
Antibodies stick to virus/pathogen and destroy it.
What are antibodies?
Proteins
What do lymphocytes do?
Lymphocytes produce antibodies which are specific to a pathogen. Antibodies stick to the pathogen and kill it. Lymphocytes also create memory cells which provide immunity against future pathogens.
What do phagocytes do?
Phagocytes engulf and digest pathogens, defending the body against pathogens.
Explain how a vaccine works
Inactive virus
Antigens in vaccine
Lymphocytes recognise antigens
Memory cells created
Antibodies are made sooner when virus encountered again
