The British Raj

A

-by 185p Britain controlled the entire India subcontinent
-some parts were ruled directly by British east India co.oany or later governors
-other regions were ruled by their own native prince’s who had pledged loyalty to Britain
-the prince’s were able to control their own territory if they met certain conditions

A

-the east India company was originally incorporated in the 17th century and was initially interested in trade with India
-by the 19th century Britain relied heavily on the wealth made by Indian trade and so they the east India company created its own private army to take the country under control

-Scots became involved in exporting jute, timber, coal, sugar and indigo and cotton
-Scots also became involved in the tea trade
- Thomas Lipton developed liptons tea
-James Ramsey marquis of Dalhousie oversaw a massive railway project and built roads and canals
-the Earl of dalhousie was governor General 1848-1856
-Dr Alexander Gray was born in Elgin and was a surgeon

-dalhousie banned settee the Hindu practice where a widow would throw herself onto the funeral pyre of her dead husband
-he also banned thuggee where an organised group of killers would attack travellers and strangle them
-many Indians resented the Scots for this
-Reverend Alexander duff established a school in calcutta in 1830 that taught English, the University of calcutta, first medical school in India and the first girls school in india

-1857, Indian troops serving in the east India company army rebelled against their British officers
-felt their religions were not being respected
-the mutiny was crushed by British soldiers
