Economy
-New Zealand was ideal for sheep and cattle farming
-Henry Nicol set up a shipyard in Auckland, which built 180 ships from 1843-1887
-John Ross and Robert Glendinning started a successful drapery business in Dunedin
-Donald Reid set up a farm that was eventually over 6300 acres
Culture
-the Scottish education system created by law in 1872 was used as the basis for the New Zealand school system
-Learmonth Dalrymple set up the first school for girls in Otago 1871
-the first medical school in New Zealand was opened in 1875 with two Scots as professors of medicine and psychology
Natives
-relations between Maoris and Scots were initially good
-the British government negotiated the treaty of waitangi in 1849 which promised the Maoris their land would be protected if they agreed to be ruled by Britain
-the increasing number of Scottish immigrants saw them being forced off their land which led to open warfare in 1872
-peace was negotiated by Donald McLean who became native minister in 1872
