Industrialisation and food production Flashcards
(9 cards)
Define fertilisers
Chemical compounds applied to soil to promote plant growth
Define globalisation
A process by which the world has become interconnected as a result of increased trade and culturally exchange.
Define green revolution
A large increase in crop production in developing countries achieved by the use of artificial fertilisers and high-yield crop varieties.
Define industrialisation
A process in which a country or society is transformed from a primarily agricultural society to one based on the manufacturing of good and services.
Define irrigation
The artificial application of water to the land to enable agricultural crops to grow.
Define nitrogen fixing
The use of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in certain plants to change nitrogen gas from the atmosphere into solid nitrogen usable by plants.
Technological developments in farm machinery
The mechanisation of farm processes allowed the replacement of human and animal labour with machinery including machines to cultivate the soil, sow seeds, and harvest the crops.
Technological developments in agricultural chemicals
Nitrogen being a vital building block of all plant and animal tissue, in particular, the protein component of grains. Allowing plants to access vital nutrients needed from the atmosphere that they can’t get.
Impact of globalisation on food availability
Globalisation led to developments in both transport systems and communication, leading to increased trade and cultural exchange. Which also led to greater economic cooperation and financial investment.
