infarction Flashcards
what is an infarction?
an area of ischaemic necrosis
which is death of tissue due to lack of oxygen.
this can be caused by an abrupt stop to arterial supply or venous drainage.
where would you find a white infarct?
in solid organs ie the heart and spleen
where would you find a red or haemorrhagic infarct?
in loose tissue with a bug blood supply ie the lungs.
what are some causes of arterial infarction?
occlusion by: embolism, atheroma and thrombosis, atheroma its plaque tissue, atheroma alone, arterial spasm, arterial trauma.
timeline of arterial infarction?
- early stages of cell death
- necrosis in muscle fibres
- acute inflammatory reaction to the dead muscle
- macrophages remove debris
- vascular granulation forms
- fibrous granulationforms
- scar formation
how is a gangrene caused?
insufficient blood supply, usually after injury or infection
infarcts are usually what shaped?
wedge shaped
how are most renal infarcts cause?
due to emboli for the left side fo the heart
how are most cerebral infarcts caused?
atherothrombus in extra-cerebral arteries.
embolic
