Q

Tobacco mosaic virus. How is it spread ? What are the effects ?

A

-Passes through plants in contract
-causes mosaic pattern in leaves and discolouration making the plant unable to carry out photosynthesis

Q

Rose black spot what are the effect ? How can it be stopped ?

16
Q

How does salmonella spread ? What are the effects of salmonella? How to prevent salmonella ?

A

-caused by eating food that has been contaminated
-causes fever,vomiting
-most chickens and turkeys are given a vaccine

17
Q

Gonitrhoea how is it spread ? What are the effects ? How is it prevented ?

A

-through sexual contact
-pain when urinating
-treated by penicillin or used barrier methods

18
Q

4 ways the strait diseases can be reduced or prevented ?

A

-being hygienic
-destroying vectors
-isolating infected individuals
-vaccination

19
Q

What are 2 features outside the human body to stop pathogens ?

A

Skin as it acts as a barrier
Hairs in the nose trap particles that contain pathogens

20
Q

What attacks pathogens inside the body ?

A

The immune system

21
Q

What are the 3 lines of attack for white blood cells ?

A

-Engulf foreign cells an digest them
-produce antibodies
-produce antitoxins

22
Q

How does the white blood cells produce antibodies ?

A

When white blood cells come across the foreign antigen it will start to produce antibodies to recognise the cells and attack the pathogens

23
Q

How does a vaccination work ?

A

-The vaccination has a small amount of dead or inactive pathogen
-Then the antibodies attack the weakened sample
-so when the real pathogen arrives the body already has the antibodies made or knows how to make them to destroy the real pathogen arrives

24
Q

2 pros and cons of a vaccination ?

A

Pro-have helped control many communicable diseases, prevents big outbreaks of disease
Con-don’t always work,bad reaction

25
What 2 drugs are used to stop or reduce the effects of a pathogen ?
Painkiller Antibiotics
26
What is the difference between painkillers and antibiotics ?
Painkillers reduce the pain but do not stop the pathogens
27
What is a downfall of antibiotics ?
Bacteria can become resistant to them due to mutation making them unusable
28
What is stage 1 of drug testing ?
Drugs are tested on human cells or tissues in the lab
29
What is stage 2 of a drug test ?
Drugs are tested on live animals
30
What is stage 3 of drug testing ?
Then on human volunteers
31
What are antibodies produced by ?
B-lymphocytes
32
What are 6 comman signs a plant has disease ?
-stunted growth -spots on leaves -decay -abnormal growth -malformed stems or leafs -discoloured
33
What are plants physical defence from diseases ?
Wavy cuticle which is a barrier to stop pathogens entering
34
What is the independent variable ?
Change
35
What is the dependent variable ?
Measure
36
What is the control variable ?
Keep the same
37
Light intensity =
1/distance (squared)
