Infection Ans Response Flashcards
(18 cards)
How do bacteria make you feel ill
Bacteria reproduce rapidly by binary fusion they may produce toxins that damage tissues and make up feel ill
How do viruses make us feel ill
They take over the cells of your body, they live and rapidly reproduce inside this causes cell damage
List three methods for preventing the spread of pathogens
-keep infected individuals isolated
-destroy the vectors that carry pathogens
-vaccination
How does you skin prevent microorganisms getting into your body
It is a physical barrier
Scabbing when cut
Covered with microorganisms that act as an extra barrier to entry
How do wbc protect you against disease
phagocytes -engulf and digest pathogens
How does your skin prevent microorganisms getting into your body
Your skin is a physical barrier
Scabbing
Covered with microorganisms that act as an extra barrier
How do wbc protect tin against disease
Phagocytes- engulf and digest pathogens
Lymphocytes-produce anti bodies which are chemicals that target specific pathogens and weaken the
Anti toxins-neutralise toxins emitted by certain pathogens
Where was the heart drug digitalis discovered
Foxglove
What is a vaccine
Small quantities of the dead or inactive pathogen so that your wbc can recognise the pathogens antigen and act more quickly next time
How is the digestive system adapted to reduce the entry of microorganisms
The stomach produces hydrochloric acid that destroys pathogens
Measles
VIRUS
A fever and red rash on skin can be fatal
Spread by air/inhalation of cough and sneeze droplets
No treatment so needs vaccination
Tobacco mosaic virus
VIRUS
Mosaic discoloration of leaves and stunted growth
spread by direct contact between diseased plant material and healthy plants, insects can act as vectors
Good hygiene and pest control
Salmonella
BACTERIA
Fever, abdominal cramps, vomiting and diharea
Eating undercooked food or food contaminated with raw meat
Poultry are vaccinated against it
Gonorrhoea
BACTERIA
Thick yellow or green discharge from vagina/penis and pain when urinating
Sexual contact
Treat with antibiotics or prevent by using barriers eg condom
HIV
VIRUS
Initially flu like symptoms, weakens the immune system so you can’t fight off other diseases
Sexual contact or exchange of bodily fluids eg blood
Antiretroviral drugs help stop attack on immune system- there is no cure nor vaccine
Malaria
PROTIST
reaccurnent fever can be fatal
Mosquitos act a a vector passing the protist to human blood steam when they feed on blood
Preventing mosquitos from breeding unsung nets and repellent. Taking antimalarial drugs
Rose black spot
FUNGUS
Purple/ black spots develop on leaves eventually turn yellow and fall off, reduces photosynthesis which stunts growth
Spores are carried by water or wind
Remove and destroy affected leaves
