The complete removal of microorganisms and their spores from the surface of an object
Surgical asepsis
What is surgical asepsis used for?
-procedures and equipment utilized when areas of the body have no normal flora
-when integrity of skin is accessed by breaking
What human body systems are considered sterile?
-genito-urinary
-circulatory
-nervous
-respiratory below vocal cords
-CSF, urine and blood are considered sterile unless pathology is present

*do not go back over area
Follows skin prep to provide a barrier to infection and also create a sterile field where instruments may be placed
