Infections and Terms Flashcards
Iatrogenic infection
literally means “brought forth by a healer”, used to refer illness caused by or resulting from medical treatment
nosocomial infection
a result of treatment in a hospital or hospital like setting, but secondary to the patient’s original condition, if they first appear 48 hours or more after hospital admission
Sources of iatrogenic/nosocomial infection?
- direct contact by touching
- contaiminated fomites- instruments and surfaces
- contact with contaminated fluids- blood and blood products
- airborne transmissions
- can alos be drug interactions and unproven or radical treatments
aseptic technique
the use of specific methods and sterilize material to exclude contamating microbes from an environment, introduced by lister
Prevention and control of iatrogenic/nosocomial infections?
- disinfection and treatment with antiseptics
- hand washing
- monitoring patient population
sterilization
absence of all life
disinfection
killing/removing pathogens
antiseptic
disinfectant applied to tissue
bactericide
substance that kills/removes only bacteria
sepsis
severe infection leading to a systemic immune response
asepsis
using aseptic technique
microbiostasis
inhibition of microbe growth
spectrum
range of activity against microbes
activity
drugs tested to determine the lowest concentration at which it inhibits microbe– called MIC
MIC
minimum inhibitory concentration, the lowest concentration at which the drug inhibits microbe
