Inheritance Flashcards
To Learn and Memorize Inheritance (5 cards)
What is inheritance?
Inheritance is the process by which genetic information is passed from parents to offspring.
What are dominant and recessive traits?
Dominant traits are expressed even if only one allele is present, while recessive traits are expressed only when two recessive alleles are present.
What are genes and chromosomes?
Genes are segments of DNA that determine traits, and chromosomes are long strands of DNA that carry many genes.
What is the law of segregation?
The law of segregation states that each individual has two alleles for each gene, and these alleles separate during gamete formation, so each gamete carries only one allele.
What is a Punnett square used for?
A Punnett square is used to predict the possible genetic outcomes of a cross between two individuals.
