inheritance patterns Flashcards
evelyn jensen (8 cards)
what is blending theory?
an (incorrect) idea that offspring are a blend of the parental traits
what is the particulate theory of inheritance?
- developed by gregor mendel
- traits inherited as particles, w offspring receiving one from each parent
how were pollination and fertilisation controlled in mendel’s experiments?
male organs were removed and flowers were manually pollinated
what are monohybrid crosses?
parental varieties w contrasting traits for 1 character crossed
what is a dihybrid cross
cross breeding parents w differing traits in TWO characteristics!!!
what is the law of independent assortment?
copies of different genes assort independently
- in context of meiosis
-> chromosomes segregate independently during the formation of gametes, so do any 2 genes located on separate chromosome pairs
what was the key to success in mendel’s experiments?
1) true breeding lines
2) large sample size
